My basic tent lay out. I can set up, by myself, in about an hour and i can live out of it
While living and working in Germany I was an active member of an experimental archaeological and re-enactment group. During the summer months we performed at medieval events across Germany. This involved demonstrating trades, skills and combat techniques to the visitors. The group had its own camp, with tents, equipment, weapons and armour and all group members wore the clothing of the period. Over the course of the weekends we answered questions, performed combat displays (in pairs or larger groups) or simply demonstrated how a life in a military camp may have been at that time.
I also took part in a couple of events with "FAMRA" a fantasy and reenactment group. Although this was enjoyable it was not really my thing.
I created all my costumes and some of my equipment by hand using historically accurate patterns, and where possible and practical, materials and techniques.
All my designs in this portfolio are hand made by me. I am not only able to design my own clothing but also created parts of my own armour and equipment. The sword scabbard was made by me including the metal ornaments. The wolf’s head is also handmade.
In the attempt to be as accurate as possible with my medieval re-enactment I made the entire costume worn from the underwear to the hand woven borders.
This is a little selection of my work. I also work with a variety of materials.
- The Monk hat is handmade, from collecting the sheep’s wool right through the manufacturing process to shaping and finishing.
- I also work with leather. I have created different knife sheaths, pouches, draw string bags and combined leather and chainmail for my gloves and leggings
- I also create other items like the large round shield. It is a wooded shield covered with rawhide which i also perpared from deer hide.
